The Problem Children:
Gateway M Series 6816 Notebook -- running Vista Home Premium Service Pack 2
Built-in Webcam -- 1.3 megapixel, supposedly Chicony 2.0 USB Camera
The Issue:
I have attempted to start the webcam via Camera Assistant Software and through Skype, as I usually do, but without success. Last time I used it was ~a month ago.
The Gory Details:
In my normal user account, the error during both start-up methods is:
Error Message 1) 'Webcam does not exist. Please restart camera or computer.'
Restarting the computer does not help; cannot start the camera in the first place to re-start it. Trying to un-install/change/repair/edit/etc via the Uninstall Program also produces this EM. It just doesn't exist to be manipulated, even if the CAS does. The camera doesnt even show up in the Device Manager, and Skype cannot find a webcam connected, either.
Attempted to un-install and re-install the driver, with and without a reboot between, there is the same EM.
In the administrator account, the error changes to:
EM 2) 'Cannot open file C:Program FilesCamera Assistant Software for ToshibacoronaBG1.bmp'
I am confused why my Gateway laptop wants to run a Toshiba-specific file.
This is the same message I get when I attempt to Modify using the driver from the Gateway Support Driver Downloads for this model. Repair gives me EM 1. Uninstall actually managed to do so, but installing it again gives me EM 1, before and after reboot.
Uninstall/Change via the Uninstall Program manager starts, but stops, saying:
EM 3) 'Setup.exe has stopped working. A problem has caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.'
For lack of any better ideas, I downloaded the Toshiba driver for the camera, since thats the file the computer was looking for. It downloaded without issue, once it was routed to the correct folder, but when CAS tried to run the camera? EM1. Rebooted. EM1 again. Just like the driver for Gateway.
One website suggested that these webcams occasionally stop working after going into sleep mode. My computer has not come out of sleep mode without a reboot for some time, and I do not remember the last time I left the camera on while putting the computer to sleep. I can fix the sleep mode error by reinstalling the ACPI x86-based PC driver, or updating to the ACPI PC, but this doesnt fix the camera issue.
Now I wonder if the camera has become disconnected from the computer, despite being built-in, because of its travels. Is there an easy way to check this? Can I safely pop off part of the casing to check? Or is there something else I can do?
I've run out of ideas on this battle.
